Better Topic Generation, No More Duplicates

08/23/2026

Version: 2.8.0, Date: August 23, 2026

Highlights

  • No more near duplicates: the generator now sees everything already in your pack, so it stops proposing variations of what you have.
  • AI written captions: a Describe button fills in short descriptions for subtopics and subcategories, without touching anything you wrote yourself.
  • Bigger sets: generation now runs up to 30 topics and 30 subtopics without truncating.
  • No accidental loss: a stray click can no longer discard a whole generated tree.

Topic generation is the main fix in this release. Packs were accumulating pairs like “Common Mistakes” and “Common Mistakes to Avoid”, or “Future Trends” and “Future Trends in Landing Pages”, because when you added topics to an existing pack the generator was only being shown what you had added in that sitting, not what was already saved. It effectively started from a blank slate every time.

Building Blocks

  • New: A Describe button on each subtopic row writes short captions with AI, and the same button appears on the subcategory builder. Captions are a short fragment, up to eight words, and are told not to simply restate the label or its parent. Your pack’s AI Instructions are passed through, so the captions match the voice you asked for.
  • Improved: It is also shown the full outline, each topic with its subtopics listed, rather than a bare list of topic names. That means a subtopic repeated under a different parent is visible to it too.
  • Improved: The rules it works under are explicit now: no rewording, no synonyms, no reframing the same idea more broadly or more narrowly, no adding or dropping a qualifier to make an existing topic look new, and no tacking the subject onto a topic name to fake novelty. It is told to return fewer topics rather than restate what you already have.
  • Improved: Topic and subtopic counts now run from 1 to 30 with a default of 30, matching the Categories generator, where they previously stopped at 20. The “AI decides” ceiling was raised to match.
  • Improved: Describe only fills descriptions that are empty, so anything you wrote by hand is never overwritten. If there is nothing empty to fill, it tells you instead of spending a credit, and while one is running the other Describe buttons are disabled so several cannot fire at once.
  • Improved: Newly generated subtopic descriptions now follow the same short fragment style as the Describe button, so a generated pack and a described one read consistently.
  • Improved: The topic builder can be dragged to resize from any edge or corner, like its sibling dialogs, instead of being locked to a fixed size.
  • Improved: The subject box prefills with your pack name and behaves as a soft default: focusing it selects the whole thing, so your first keystroke replaces it if you want something else. It re-seeds after a successful run.
  • Improved: Subtopic counts now use the same purple layers treatment in all five card views, on both the Topics list and the pack detail page. Previously each page had two different renderers and only one of them was styled, and the four column view dropped the word “topics” altogether.
  • Improved: The compact view on the pack detail page now uses icon-only Edit and Delete buttons, matching the categories detail page at the same density.
  • Improved: The “Uses AI credits” note now sits immediately to the left of the button it applies to in both builders, so it is obvious which action it refers to.
  • Fixed: The topic generator now sees your pack’s saved topics as well as anything you have just added, combined and de-duplicated, so it knows what already exists before it proposes anything.
  • Fixed: Large generations were truncating part way through and silently coming back with nothing. Generation now has enough room for a full 30 by 30 set, so an ambitious pack completes instead of quietly failing.
  • Fixed: The topic builder had a plain click-anywhere-to-close backdrop, so a stray click could discard an entire generated tree. Closing it with unsaved changes, by backdrop, X, Cancel or Escape, now asks whether you want to discard or keep editing. Read-only packs never prompt, since there is nothing to lose.
